Hey guys, after watching this video, what would you do if you asked your students if they like reading and one student responding " No, it sucks!!" How would you handle that?
Great question! This is bound to happen eventually! One thing is for sure, you never yell or punish the child. I think if I was Christopher Myers I would make a story about who hates reading and make an ending where he or she begins to like reading because they realiize how fun reading can be. Depends on the situation though!
I agree that John's suggestion would be a great idea to try. I would also try other activities that blend reading material that most students would like with performance or music activities. For upper elementary or middle school students, we could do activities with song lyrics by translating it into a story or they could translate a story into a song, complete with a class created music video.
Looks like we have started a good discussion forum on how to make connections to reluctant readers? Keep going so we will have a list of activities to help our reluctant readers.
